JKUAT

Jomo Kenyatta University Agriculture and Technology JKUAT students were on rampage yesterday , March 9th, along Thika Super Highway protesting the death of one of their own. The students are protesting the death of a male student at the college dispensary after alleged food poisoning and term his death as a result of negligence from the doctors' side.

The late student, a second year based at the institution's main campus had gone to the varsity dispensary to seek medication, on Wednesday 9th March around morning hours. He passed on 6 hours later as he waited on the queue at the dispensary.
Fellow comrades broke into a demonstration after learning of the sad news. They cited negligence from the doctors who were hesitant and too slow to save the young man's life. This has always been the situation in the campus dispensary as reported by one of the students. The strike got heated thus attracted the attention of police officers around the institution. A series of gunshots could be heard all over the campus thus sending the students to run for their safety.
There could be a sinister motive to the death of this student as reported by a source that sought anonymity.
The institution did not comment on the matter,
saying it was investigating before releasing a statement.
Fellow comrades of JKUAT Nairobi campus joined in the strike which took to the Thika Super Highway. The irate students jammed the road causing traffic that went kilometres. Police later took charge of the situation and promised to ensure normal flow of traffic.
It is unfortunate that young life has been lost and we join comrades of JKUAT as they mourn the tragic loss. Perhaps, in making deep inquiries one would ask why a life is lost in such a summarised manner. Can't there be a permanent solution to comrades' deaths in our institutions of learning?Something should be done and done fast to improve on the services offered to students in these dispensaries. After our thorough investigations, we have come to a conclusion that the situation at the health facilities is similar in all public universities.
Parents have entrusted their children's future in their hands and their safety to the institutions. It is sad that we come across cases of negligence from staff of the campus. Why they cannot be handled with enough regard remains a question unanswered.
We hope for a national address on this issue as we look forward to a future with no more reckless deaths of students.
