10 SKILLS EVERY KENYAN CAMPUS STUDENT MUST HAVE OR ELSE LIVE MISERABLY

Once in a while, I pen down some thoughts. Campus kids today are very lucky. There are a number of Kenyan blogs targeting just them. Earlier at campus, you had to figure everything out by yourself. There were no blogs to entertain campusers. There was no big brother to guide us. Having seen a fair deal of life, I believe, every University student in Kenya must acquire these skills. It doesn’t matter what course you pursue or what your career aspirations are, these cut across all fields. Consider them as the foundation of a worthy Kenyan Campus student.
1) SALES: What is the most important business skill? What’s the most important aspect of an entrepreneur? It’s not passion. It’s not hard work. It’s learning how to sell. All aspects of your life are determined by how well you sell yourself. Know why you write CVs? Well that’s how you sell yourself to an employer? When you vibe a girl, you are selling yourself to her. I have never seen anyone fail in life as long as they were good salesmen. Sales is what runs a business, sales is what runs life.
2) PUBLIC SPEAKING: This is the number one fear for Kenyans. It makes no sense. If someone intends on being successful they will be forced to make presentations at some point in their life. They can remain in the background for a long time… But… Eventually they will be forced to make public speeches. You know what, you got to learn to speak in public. I have seen even the most muscular of campus guys tremble when it’s time to address a gathering. Wow…
3) WRITING: It’s funny how most campus students can’t craft a sentence. Most campusers suck at writing. You read through their reports or proposals and you want to throw up. But since you are lucky to be a follower of www.campusvibe254.blogspot.com, you are exposed to what great writing reads like. While our entertainment writing is mediocre at best (just look at the blog!) you’re going to need solid writing skills for putting together contracts. At *minimum* everyone needs to understand the basics. In addition, you’re going to be forced to communicate with people (a lot!) assigning tasks via email etc.
4) READING: Yes. Reading is a skill. The ability to understand tone and context in written form is a lost art. And. It doesn’t stop there. Everyone needs to learn how to read body language as well.
5) MATH: Of course, I don’t imply engineering Math. That is reserved for a few of us in this world. Quick math is the real key. When people chat about numbers, you can do a spot check in your head. How can you even make money unless you get comfortable with numbers? You know why those girls get richer when you leave campus, they understand numbers. They know what it means to earn and lose.
6) ABILITY TO PLAY DUMB: Yes this is a skill as well. When you meet someone you don’t want to keep in contact with, it is best to smile, nod and agree. This is actually the hardest skill to learn. When you meet blonde girls, the best is to play blonde and you will soon find yourself connecting without intimidating them. In addition, when you hear people make comments that are completely wrong, *let them run with it*. Letting someone run with false information about you (or a specific topic) can give you an enormous edge. You’ll have to pick your spots on when to call them out and when to let them run with bad information.
7) DATING: Seriously if you suck at dating, then your whole life is going to suck. You will always end up with the wrong people. You will always never date people that are out of your league, the ones that get every eye rolling. Surprisingly most campusers suck at this skill.
8) HEALTH and FITNESS: You only get one body. Again. You only get one body so if you don’t treat it correctly you will lose time and money. Health > wealth every single time.
9) TECHNOLOGY: You would be surprised at how little people know (this includes us). You can make a living by simply setting up websites for people. Once you learn the skill, you pitch it as follows “I will set it up for you and do everything… but on an annual basis you will pay me x% on top of the hosting fees which I will cover”. Then the person will write you a check every year. I often meet campusers who don’t even have an email address!!! Some can’t operate a printer….
10) STYLE and DESIGN: Most people do not know how to dress. They do not know how to make a presentation look good. They do not know what colors go where and why. In short, they are lost. Learning how to dress (at minimum) is extremely important as people will judge you in less than two seconds! Know what to wear to a specific place. If you are attending a house party, it makes no sense for you to show up in a suit. Know which colors compliment your skin tone.
