Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has recently paid a
visit to the varsity students making betting part and parcel of their
lifestyle. The students can’t fathom how
quickly it has left many of them broke, instead of saving their Helb on
important issues, they prefer to spend the money on betting
“Betting ni chama”, explains Ken, a third year student of
Moi University in the school of Education,
adding that, “sisi hupatia sportpesa hadi siku turn yako itafika, siku ya muhindi kutupatia hufika tu, nimebet since 2013 and I have lost more than I have gained”

Omariba, also a third year in the school of information
sciences refers to it as “kuingia kwa ofisi” since it’s the area which doesn’t require
any degree papers. He carries out extensive analysis before placing a bet which
increases his chances of winning.
As the day goes by, things turn sour for him,
he swallows his pride and term it as “siku mbaya kwa ofisi”. Looking mournfully
at his account history telling himself ‘hii
pesa lazima itarudi”
And with the new football season around the corner, the saddest
truth is that University students are gambling away the money entrusted to them
by the government leaving them with no cent at all making others to engage into
theft and some losing their school fees.
Bet what you can afford to lose and not losing what you cant
afford
