Kericho - A 3rd year student at the University of Kabianga Saturday drowned at River Chemosit in Kericho County and his body retrieved Sunday at noon.
Samson Gitonga, a Communication and Public Relations student was in the company of other friends enjoying themselves in the University not knowing that that was his last picnic.
The body was recovered following rescue efforts by the Red Cross and Disaster Management team from Bomet County and villagers.

Belgut Sub-county Deputy Commissioner, Jamlick Mbuba who was present at the scene said the incident was tragic and cautioned all the river users to be extra careful during this rainy season.
“We received information around 4p.m on Saturday that a student had drowned in the river. We tried to get the rescue team in vain but today, we were joined by Disaster Management team and Red Cross and we have retrieved the body,” Mbuba said.
He added, “It is time the students and villagers took precautions while using the river because it has history of sweeping people away,” he said.
Mbuba urged the University management to warn the students about the dangers of swimming in the river.
The Director of Communications and Editorial Services of the Student Union in the University, Cornelius Kibet said it was very unfortunate to lose such a promising colleague at that age and at that particular time.
“He was my course and classmate for the last three years. He was always jovial and friendly and it is hard to come to terms with his untimely demise,” said Kibet.
In 2013 almost the same time, a student who was in his 2nd year drowned about a kilometre from the place Samson Gitonga drowned, with the search team taking 10 days to retrieve his body.
The river is the major picnic place for the University students.
